Former Apple CEO launches new Android phones for developing markets

A startup co-founded by former Apple CEO John Sculley has launched two Android phones targeted towards mid-range customers in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.

The new company, Obi Worldphone, launched its SF1 and SJ1.5 phones (named after San Francisco and San Jose) “to address the market need between high-design smartphones at high prices and generic smartphones at low prices,” as the company said in its announcement.

According to Sculley “Obi has taken the best of Silicon Valley—innovations in design, state-of-the-art technology and high standards for manufacturing—and fused them into beautiful, powerful tools at attractive prices.”

The two phones use Android Lollipop laced with a custom skin.

The SF1 runs Android 5.0.2 Lollipop, on a 1.5GHz 8-core Qualcomm MSM8939 Snapdragon 615 with an Adreno 405 GPU. It has a 5-inch display with resolution of 1920×1080, Corning Gorilla Glass 4, a 13-megapixel camera, and a front-facing 5-megapixel camera. Battery is 3,000 mAh.

It comes with a price tag of $199 for the 2GB RAM version with 16GB internal storage, and $249 for 3GB RAM with 32GB storage. Storage expansion is available via MicroSD cards.
